Our Inspiration
World Teacher Swami Sivananda
World Teacher Swami Sivananda became one of the most prolific Yoga teacher ever existed. Swami Sivananda's teachings spread quickly throughout these entire planets. In subsequent years he wrote hundreds of books and articles on yoga and spirituality to maintain and introduce yogic values in the minds of the general public. His emphasis was on breaking down the barriers which separated the needy from the teachings that could help them, whether this took the form of yoga for health, peace of mind or spiritual aspiration. This ideology continues to guide the work of the Satyananda branch of his lineage. To this end Swami Sivananda toured India extensively, inspiring people to practice yoga and lead a divine life. He wrote in a style that is very direct and bursting with dynamic, spiritual energy. As a result many who read his books felt their lives deeply touched and transformed and so came from all of India, all of the world, to learn from him directly, and to bask in his holy presence. A great spiritual luminary of the 20th century, Swami Sivananda Saraswati developed yoga as a practical, integrated subject which everyone could apply in their lives. Embodying the spirit of service to humanity, he inspired people to practice yoga and lead a divine life. His eightfold path: serve, love, give, purify, be good, do good, meditate, realize, became a roadmap for spiritual aspirants worldwide.

Satyananda's teachings

Satyananda's teachings emphasize an "Integral Yoga" with a strong emphasis on Tantra. Known as the "Bihar Yoga" system or "Satyananda Yoga". This system addresses the qualities of head, heart and hands – intellect, emotion and action and attempts to integrate the physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions of yoga into each practice. Satyananda brought the yogic side of tantra to the forefront. He defined the pawanmuktasana series, the shakti bandhas and the grouping of the various asanas according to position. Pranayama, prana vidya and the role of mudras and bandhas were scientifically explained by him and made generally available for the first time. Satyananda classified and expounded the techniques given in the tantras as a series of different stages and levels of pratyahara such as antar mouna, and different stages of meditation. He invented the technique of yoga nidra, now known worldwide as Satyananda Yoga Nidra, according to the tantric system of nyasa and defined and codified the different stages of the technique.

Swami Niranjanananda
Swami Niranjanananda is considered by his followers to be a yogi by birth. He was named 'Niranjan' (the Untainted One) by his guru Swami Satyananda. Swami Niranjanananda is a modern master of yoga, whose understanding spans both the scientific Western culture and the mystical wisdom of the East. The process of yoga, from the physical and moral to meditation and samadhi, is one of harmonizing the head. The yamas and niyamas make one understand the need to cultivate positive qualities in order to enhance and increase the beauty of life. Asana and pranayama provide one with physical health and well-being. Pratyahara and dharana provide one with the ability to stop the mental chatter. Dhyana and samadhi provide a connection to link up with the energy and the spirit which is inherent and vibrant within. This entire process of yoga deals with the management of the head and the mind.
However, there are other aspects of spirituality which need to be awakened and developed. One needs to open up the heart and to harmonize his performance. Purification of feelings and emotions, the expression of love and compassion which is not self-centered, egocentric and selfish; and purification and harmony in the act of performing one's duties, one's dharma - these are the other components of spirituality. How can we awaken these faculties? How can we nurture the qualities of heart and hands? That is the training of the other yogas.
